Kudremukh Peak Trek
Hosted by Elegant Adventurers
An 18-20km round-trip trek through shola forest and rolling grasslands in the Western Ghats to Kudremukh Peak (1,892m) -- Karnataka's iconic "horse-face" mountain and one of its toughest permitted day treks.
Trip details
Kudremukh ("horse-face" in Kannada, for the shape the peak cuts against the sky from certain angles) rises 1,892m inside Kudremukh National Park, a 600 sq km biodiversity-hotspot reserve spanning Chikmagalur and Dakshina Kannada districts. It is one of Karnataka's most demanding permitted day treks: a full push through dense shola forest, stream crossings, and open rolling grasslands to a summit ridge with 360-degree views across the Western Ghats, reaching the Arabian Sea coastline on a clear day.

Safety details & FAQ
Do I need a permit, and can I get one on the day?
Yes, a Forest Department permit is mandatory and must be booked online in advance — there is no same-day or walk-in booking at the checkpost.
Is a guide really required?
Yes — a registered Forest Department guide is compulsory for every group entering the park; this isn't optional or something an operator can skip.
Can I camp on the mountain?
No — overnight stays inside the national park are not permitted on this route. It's a single-day trek that must finish before dark.
What's the best time of year to do this?
October to February for the most reliable weather and clearest views. The park also has a fire-season closure most years (commonly mid-January to April) — check current status before you book.
How fit do I need to be?
You should be comfortable with 6-9 hours of continuous walking and a steep, sustained climb. It's rated moderate-to-difficult; a couple of shorter Western Ghats treks beforehand is a reasonable warm-up if this is your first big one.
Is it safe — any wildlife concerns?
The park is a biodiversity hotspot with large predators (tiger, leopard, wild dog) among its resident wildlife, which is exactly why a Forest Department guide and a fixed daylight route are mandatory — stay with the group and guide at all times.
